Interviews
Swindon Festival of Literature 2011

In May 2011 Jacki participated in the highly-respected Swindon Festival of Literature which has traditionally attracted top authors across a wealth of subjects for this annual book fest.

At the two-week 2011 Swindon Festival of Literature, Jacki joined an illustrious list of speakers that included Martin Bell, Sally Magnusson, Bonnie Greer, Simon Brett, Peter Sissons and comedian Harry Hill.

At the festival, Jacki spoke candidly on what it means to be a woman and a survivor of childhood abuse, drawing on the questions about what determines the nature of our personal relationships, what are the burdens we bear and the joys we celebrate in our life? She also asked what makes some people carry guilt and lose out on life, while others overcome and triumph?

The 40-minute lunchtime interview, which was followed by 20 minutes of questions from an enthralled audience at the Swindon Arts Centre, was reviewed by the Swindon Advertiser whose reporter, David Wiles, wrote:

WOMEN CAN WORK WONDERS

“WOMEN are capable of moving mountains,” said Jacki Rodikis as she spoke openly of a childhood of abuse.

The successful businesswoman was at the Art Centre yesterday to talk about her book “Because You’re A Woman”, which blends poetry and prose to give a raw account of the sexual abuse she suffered when she was a girl.

Jacki also spoke about how she suppressed those memories, which had a big impact on her relationship with her daughter.

The inspirational talk seemed to connect with many of the women sitting in the audience and Jacki explained how counselling and her Christian faith helped her come to terms with what had happened.

Jacki used the writing of her book, which has some powerful poetry throughout, as a cathartic experience after it was recommended by a nurse when she was in a clinic. She said: “When I sat down all these thoughts came out on the page and it helped a great deal.

“It was never my intention to have the book published but once it was written I thought that it would help inspire other women who might have been in a similar position,” she said.
